73% Cabernet Sauvignon; 20% Merlot; 5% Cabernet Franc; 2% Petit Verdot. We like this wine's initial impressions of sweet oak and curranty fruit, and we like its subtle highlights of briar and dusty earth, but we are less taken by its inherent stiffness. In the end, it is a little too nervy and not sufficiently fleshed out to claim full recommendation as a wine that will be substantially bettered by keeping.

Good ruby-red. Musky aromas of plum syrup, earth, tobacco, herbs and chocolatey oak; suggests less even ripening than the 2007. Then reasonably rich but a bit dry in the mouth, and less harmonious than the '07. A medicinal menthol quality gives this wine a slightly disjointed feel.

MOST PEOPLE KNOW PORTUGAL FOR PORTO AND VINO VERDE (GREEN WINE)

WHAT ELSE – PORTUGAL IS ON OF THE TEN LARGEST WINE PRODUCING COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD. OF ALL THE E.U. COUNTRIES THEIR WINES ARE THE MOST RESONABLE.

LEARN THE REGION
SAFE REGIONS TO LOOK FOR ARE THE
DAO, DOURO, BEIRA INTERIOR, ALENTEJO

LABEL TERMS
QUINTA – ESTATE WINE
COLHEITA – SELECTED GRAPES
RESERVA – HIGHIER GRADE OF WINE

WHITES
ARINTO – FULLBOED GRAPE, GREAT ACIDITY

WINE TO TRY – BY REGION

BUCELAS – QUINTA DA ROMEIRA
MADE FROM ARINTO GRAPES. GREAT CITRUS NOSE WITH SOME TROPICAL FRUIT OVER TONES. THIS ESTATE BOTTLED WINE IS ONE OF PORTUGALS BEST.

ALENTEJO – ESPORAO RESERVA WHITE
THE MOST FAMOUS WINERY IN PORTUGAL – THE LAFITE OF PORTUGAL
ARINTO IS ONE OF THE THREE GRAPES IN THIS WINE
EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS A $30 MERSAULT FROM BURGUNDY RICH AND FULL BODIED.

ESTREMADURA – POR TUGA
A GREAT BLEND – CLASSIC PORTUGESE GRAPE – TOURIGA AND SOME NEW WORLD GRAPES (CABERNET/SYRAH), SO NICE FRUIT, HINT OF OAK.

RIBATEJO – PADRE PEDRO
THE FASTEST GROING REGION IN PORTUGAL – A BLENDED RED, GREAT NOSE, RIPE CHERRY AND RASSBERRY FLAVORS AND LONG FINISH.

ALENTEJO – ESPORAO RESERVA
A VERY DEEP RICH RED WITH A LONG FINISH. REMINDS ME OF A CHATEAU-NEUF-DU-PAPE WITH CABERNET ADDED.
